What it is for
Most people need a file tool for small, ordinary jobs: combine a few scans, turn photos into one document, pull a page out of a long file, make a photo small enough to email, or open an iPhone picture on a Windows laptop. Many online tools ask you to upload the file to their server first. For a contract, an ID or a family photo, that is more trust than the job deserves.
PlumPDF was built so you do not have to extend that trust. The tools do the work on your device, and the site never receives your files.
How it works
When you open a tool, your browser downloads the page and a small amount of code. When you choose a file, it is read by that code on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Images are decoded by your browser and written by its canvas, or, where the browser cannot do it, by encoders that run in the browser too. PDF files are built, edited and drawn in the browser, zip files are made there, OCR reads scanned pages there, and passwords are added and removed there.
The image encoders, the HEIC decoder, the password engine and the OCR engine are downloaded only the first time a tool needs them. After your first visit the site is saved in your browser, so it keeps working without an internet connection.
Why private by design
Private by design means there is no upload to protect, rather than an upload we promise to handle carefully. No server of ours ever has your files, so none can be lost, leaked or kept. It also means PlumPDF is fast for ordinary files, and works on a plane.
The trade-off is that your device does the work. Very large files can be slow on a phone, OCR in particular, and some jobs, such as converting spreadsheets and presentations, are not something this approach covers today. Where a tool takes a shortcut, such as Word to PDF drawing each page as a picture with a text layer, the tool page says so. The site says so plainly on each tool page.
PlumPDF measures how the site is used with analytics cookies, never including file names or contents. The privacy policy has the details.
What it does not do
No PowerPoint files or old .xls spreadsheets (Excel .xlsx and .csv work). Edit PDF changes text line by line, without reflowing paragraphs. No recovery of forgotten passwords: Unlock PDF needs the password. No certificate-based digital signatures: Sign PDF adds a visual signature. OCR reads printed text, not handwriting. No animated output: GIF, WEBP and AVIF animations are converted to their first frame. If you need those, a desktop program is the right tool.
Who built it
PlumPDF was founded by Akash Gupta, an independent developer from India, who designs and develops it. He built it because most online PDF tools ask you to upload your files to someone else's server, and for everyday conversions that isn't necessary: a modern browser can do the work on your own device.
