Reduce image size, to the KB you need

Online forms often reject a photo for being over a size limit. This tool lets you set any maximum in KB and finds the best JPG quality that fits under it. It runs in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded.

How to use Reduce Image Size in KB

  1. Add your photos

Click Select images or drop JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC or other image files on the page. Up to 50 at once.

  2. Check the target size

The target is already set. Change it if your form asks for a different limit, then press Compress.

  3. Preview and download

Check each result's size and quality, then download the files one by one or as a zip.

Hitting a size target without guessing

Normal compressors ask for a quality number and leave you to guess what size it produces. Here you state the size you need and the tool does the guessing for you. It tries different JPEG qualities and keeps the highest one whose file is still under your maximum, so the photo looks as good as the limit allows.

Some photos are too large in pixels to fit even at low quality. In that case the tool reduces the width and height step by step until the file fits. If your form also states an exact width and height, you can enter them and the photo is cropped from the centre to that shape, then resized.

Everything runs in your browser. You can preview each result before you download it, and metadata such as GPS location is left out of the new file.

Questions about Reduce Image Size in KB

How do I choose the right size in KB?

Use the number your form states, usually shown next to the upload box as a maximum. Type it into the size field, or pick one of the quick sizes. If the form also gives a minimum, set that too, because some forms reject tiny files as well.

How does it get a photo down to the size I typed?

It searches for the highest JPEG quality that keeps the file under your maximum. If even low quality is still too big, it shrinks the pixel dimensions step by step until the file fits. You see the final size, pixel size and quality for every result.

Is a KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes? Which one does this use?

Forms differ, and the form rarely says which it means. To be safe the tool aims under the limit counted as 1,000 bytes per KB, which is also under the limit counted as 1,024. A file that passes the strict count passes the loose one.

Which kinds of image can I add?

JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC (the format iPhones use), AVIF, GIF and BMP. The result is always a JPG, since that is what most forms ask for. Transparent areas in a PNG or WEBP become white.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The photos are read and compressed inside your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored. Closing the tab discards everything. You can check by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and compressing anyway.

Can I do many photos at once?

Yes, up to 50 images of up to 50 MB each. Each one is compressed to the same target on its own, and you can download them singly or press the zip button for all of them.
