PNG to WEBP, smaller with transparency

This tool converts PNG images to WEBP inside your browser. WEBP keeps transparency like PNG does, but is usually much smaller, which makes it a good format for websites. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use PNG to WEBP

  1. Add PNG files

Click Select PNG images, drop them on the page, or paste. Up to 50 at once.

  2. Set the quality

The default of 85 is a good balance. Higher keeps fine detail, lower saves more space.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to WEBP and save the files, or download a zip.

PNG and WEBP on the web

PNG is often used on websites for anything that needs a transparent background: logos, product photos on a white page, interface graphics. It is lossless, which also makes it heavy. WEBP supports the same transparency with far better compression.

PlumPDF decodes each PNG with your browser and encodes the pixels, alpha channel included, as WEBP at the quality you set. In Safari, which cannot write WEBP from a canvas, PlumPDF uses its own WEBP encoder and tells you so.

Keep the original PNG files if you will edit the images again: every lossy save loses a little. For publishing, WEBP is the better choice, and every current browser displays it. No metadata is carried over.

Questions about PNG to WEBP

Does WEBP keep the transparent background?

Yes. WEBP has an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the PNG stay that way.

Is the conversion lossless?

Not quite: PlumPDF writes lossy WEBP at the quality you choose, which is what makes the files small. At 90 or above, graphics and screenshots look the same as the PNG to most people.

How much space will I save?

For screenshots and photos stored as PNG, savings of 50 to 80 percent are common. Flat graphics with few colours shrink less, but are usually still smaller as WEBP.

Can I convert several PNG files to WEBP at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 images, press Convert, and each one becomes its own WEBP file. Download them one at a time, or press "Download all (.zip)" to get one zip file. The zip is made in your browser too.

Is it safe to convert PNG to WEBP online?

With PlumPDF the images never leave your device. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab discards everything. You can check by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and converting anyway.
