How the turn is applied

Every image is first decoded by your browser and turned upright using its EXIF rotation tag, if it has one. The turns you choose are then applied to the pixels themselves: a 90 degree rotation swaps the width and height, and a flip mirrors the picture without changing its size.

Because the pixels are moved, the result displays the same way in every program, including the ones that ignore EXIF tags. The new file carries no metadata at all, so there is no leftover tag to turn it again by mistake.

PNG and other lossless formats come out exactly as they went in, only turned. JPG, WEBP and AVIF are encoded again at the quality you set; keep it at 90 or more if you will edit the images further. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

Questions about Rotate Image

How do I rotate several images at once?

Add them all, then use Rotate left, Rotate right, Flip horizontal or Flip vertical in the options panel. Each button applies to every image. The buttons on a single image change only that one.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping?

Rotating turns the picture by a quarter or half turn, like turning a printed photo on a table. Flipping mirrors it: horizontal swaps left and right, vertical swaps top and bottom.

Does rotating a JPG lose quality?

A little, because the turned image has to be saved as a JPG again. At the default quality of 90 the difference is very hard to see. PNG is lossless, so PNG images do not change at all apart from the turn.

My photo shows the right way up on my phone but sideways elsewhere. Will this fix it?

Yes. Phones often store photos sideways with a tag saying how to turn them, and some programs ignore the tag. PlumPDF applies the tag when it opens the photo and saves the pixels the right way round, without the tag, so the photo looks the same everywhere. Turn it further here if needed.

Which format are the images saved in?

The same as each original by default. GIF, BMP and SVG become PNG and HEIC becomes JPG, because browsers cannot write those formats. You can pick one format for all of them instead.

Is it safe to convert and rotate images online?

With PlumPDF the images never leave your device. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab discards everything. You can check by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and converting anyway.
