Edit a Word document in your browser

This editor opens a Word document (.docx) in your browser so you can change it without installing anything. Edit the text, set headings, fonts, sizes and colours, add lists, tables, pictures and links, and find and replace words. Download the result as a Word file or a PDF, or start from a blank page. How the Word editor handles your file

A .docx file is a zip of XML. When you open one, the document part is read in your browser and turned into a page you can edit; PlumPDF adds what the reader leaves out on its own, such as alignment, sizes and text colour.

When you download, the document is written back as a new .docx with the docx library: real headings, lists, tables and pictures that any word processor can open and edit. A PDF is made from that file, page by page, with a text layer so it stays searchable.

Word can do far more than a browser editor, so some things are simplified rather than lost silently: the editor lists them when you open a file. Keep your original if you need tracked changes, comments or macros.

Questions about Edit Word document

How do I edit a Word document online without uploading it?

Drop the .docx above. PlumPDF reads it in your browser, shows it on a page and lets you type and format straight away. When you are done, press Download and choose Word or PDF. The file stays on your device the whole time.

What formatting is kept when I open a document?

Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, strike-through, alignment, font family, size, text colour, highlights, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, pictures, links and page breaks. Sizes and colours are matched to the nearest choice in the toolbar.

What does not come across?

Features beyond plain document text are simplified: tracked changes are kept as they stand, comments, text boxes, shapes, headers and footers are left out, fields such as a table of contents keep their last text, and macros are never run. The editor lists what it simplified when you open a file.

Can I save the document as a PDF?

Yes. Press Download and choose PDF. Each page is drawn the way it will print and carries a hidden text layer, so the PDF can be searched and its text copied. Choose A4 or Letter pages in the bar under the document.

Can I start a new document from scratch?

Yes. Choose Start a blank document instead of opening a file, then download it as Word or PDF when you are done.

Does it open old .doc files?

No. It reads .docx, the format Word has used since 2007. Open a .doc in your word processor and save it as .docx first.
