Compress images, keep them looking good

This tool makes JPG, PNG and WEBP images smaller inside your browser. JPG and WEBP are re-encoded at a quality you choose; PNG is optimised without losing a single pixel. You see the saving for each file, and a file that would not shrink is returned unchanged.

How to use Compress Image

  1. Add your images

Click Select images or drop JPG, PNG and WEBP files on the page. Up to 50 at once.

  2. Pick a level

Light, Balanced or Strong, or set the exact quality for JPG and WEBP.

  3. Compress and download

Press Compress. Check the before and after sizes, then download the files or a zip.

How each format is compressed

JPG files are decoded and encoded again with an improved JPEG encoder that produces noticeably smaller files than a camera or a browser at the same visual quality. WEBP files are re-encoded with a WEBP encoder. For both, the quality setting decides how much fine detail is traded for size.

PNG files are handled differently. The PNG optimiser tries better ways of storing the same pixels: smarter filters, stronger compression and, where an image uses few colours, a smaller palette. The picture is identical afterwards. The Strong level tries harder and takes longer.

The encoders run in a background worker in your browser, loaded only when you press Compress. PlumPDF compares every result with the original and keeps whichever is smaller, so compressing can never make a file bigger.

Questions about Compress Image

Can I make an image smaller than a set size, like 50 KB?

Yes. Tick "Set a size limit" and type the size in KB. Each image is saved as a JPG at the best quality under that size, with fewer pixels only if needed. It aims under the limit whether a form counts a KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

How much smaller will my images get?

Photos straight from a camera or phone often shrink by 50 to 80 percent at the Balanced level with little visible change. Images that were already optimised shrink less. PNG optimisation is lossless and typically saves 5 to 40 percent.

Will compression make my photos look worse?

JPG and WEBP compression removes fine detail, so at very low quality you will see blur and blocky areas. Light and Balanced are chosen to be hard to tell from the original on screen. PNG compression changes no pixels at all.

What if an image does not get smaller?

Then you get the original file back, byte for byte, marked "Already well compressed". PlumPDF never hands you a bigger file than the one you added.

Is the metadata removed?

For files that are recompressed, yes: EXIF data such as GPS location and camera details is not written, which also saves space. A file returned unchanged because it would not shrink keeps whatever metadata it had.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the encoders are downloaded. The encoders load the first time you compress (a few hundred kilobytes) and are then kept by your browser.

Can I compress HEIC, GIF or AVIF?

Not here. Convert them first with the Image converter: to JPG or WEBP for photos, or AVIF for the smallest files.
