How to use Compare PDF
Add both versions
Add the original and the changed PDF, together or one at a time. If they went in the wrong way round, press the swap button to switch them.
Press Compare
Press Compare. Both files are read in your browser and checked word by word and pixel by pixel. Long documents can take a moment.
Review the changes
Open Text changes to see added words in green and removed words struck through in red. Open Visual changes to see the differences marked in red on each changed page.
Two ways to see what changed
Reading two versions side by side is slow, and a small change is easy to miss. The text comparison lists every word that was added or removed, page by page, with long unchanged stretches folded away. Spacing and line breaks are ignored, so you see real edits and not reflowed text.
Words are not the whole story. A signature, a stamp, a picture or a moved block does not show up in a word list, so the visual comparison draws both versions of each page and marks the differences in red, with roughly what share of the page changed.
This suits contract and agreement versions, forms and reports, and checking what a counterparty changed before you sign. Both files stay on your device, and the tool works offline after the first visit.
Questions about Compare PDF
What does the text comparison show?
Every word that was added is highlighted in green and every word that was removed is struck through in red, shown inline and page by page. A summary gives the number of words added and removed and how many pages changed. Long unchanged stretches are folded, and you can click them to show the text.
Do spacing and line breaks count as changes?
No. Only the words are compared, so a different line break, extra space or reflowed paragraph is not reported as a change. A word that was reworded, added or deleted is.
What does the visual comparison do?
It draws each page of both versions and compares them pixel by pixel. Differences are shown in red on the changed page, with roughly what share of the page changed. This catches pictures, signatures, stamps and layout, not only text.
Can I compare scanned PDFs?
A scan without selectable text gets the visual comparison only. If you want a word-by-word comparison, run OCR PDF on both files first so they contain text, then compare the results.
Why do I see a visual comparison instead of a word list?
When two documents differ almost completely, a list of every word added and removed is not much use. In that case the tool shows the visual comparison instead, so you can see the pages side by side with the differences marked.
Which files can I compare?
Two PDFs: the original and the changed version. They can have a different number of pages. Use the swap button if you added them in the wrong order, so that added and removed words are the right way round.
Are my documents sent anywhere?
No. Both files are read on your device in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere. That makes it suitable for contracts and other private documents. It works offline after your first visit, and it is free with no sign-up.
