What happens to a WEBP on its way into a PDF
PDF has no native support for WEBP, so a conversion step is unavoidable. Your browser decodes the WEBP into pixels, PlumPDF paints them onto a white canvas at the full original size, and the canvas is encoded as a JPEG at quality 92 before it goes into the PDF.
The full resolution is kept: a 3000 by 2000 pixel WEBP produces a 3000 by 2000 pixel picture on the page, not a thumbnail. What changes is the compression, not the pixel count.
Because JPEG has no transparency, transparent regions are filled with white. If you need to keep transparency, convert the original to PNG first and use PNG to PDF.
Decoding relies on your browser. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all read WEBP.
Questions about WEBP to PDF
Can I convert multiple WEBP images into one PDF?
Yes. Add up to 50 files, keep "One PDF with all images" selected, and each image becomes one page in the order shown in the list. Choose "One PDF per image" if you want separate files, which you can download together as a zip.
Why convert WEBP to PDF?
WEBP is common on the web, but many programs, printers and upload forms only accept PDF or JPG. A PDF also keeps several images together in a fixed order.
Does the image get recompressed?
Yes. A PDF cannot hold WEBP data directly, so each image is decoded by your browser, drawn on a white canvas and saved in the PDF as JPEG at quality 92. At that setting the difference is very hard to see, but it is not bit-for-bit identical.
What happens to a transparent WEBP?
The transparent areas become white, because the image is flattened onto a white background before it is saved as JPEG.
What about animated WEBP files?
Only the first frame ends up in the PDF. A PDF page is static, so there is nowhere for an animation to go.
What page size will my PDF have?
By default the page matches the image, so nothing is cropped or padded. If you pick A4 or US Letter, the image is centred and scaled down to fit, never enlarged past its natural size at 96 DPI. A4 and Letter also unlock orientation and margin options.
Is it safe to convert WEBP files to PDF online?
Yes, in the sense that matters here: PlumPDF never receives your files. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab discards everything. You can check this by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and converting anyway.
