AVIF support and file size

AVIF is a modern image format used by websites and some phones to save bandwidth. It is not supported by PDF itself, and PlumPDF does not include its own AVIF decoder: it asks your browser to do it. That keeps the site small, and it means anything your browser can show, PlumPDF can convert.

The decoded picture is drawn at full size on a white canvas and saved into the PDF as a JPEG at quality 92. Transparent areas turn white. If the AVIF is an animation, only the first frame is used.

Expect the PDF to be noticeably larger than the AVIF you started with. If the file size matters, consider whether you need the PDF at all, or share the AVIF itself with people who can open it.

Questions about AVIF to PDF

Which browsers can convert AVIF to PDF?

Any browser that can display AVIF: current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later. If your browser cannot decode a file, PlumPDF tells you it could not read the image instead of making a blank page.

Is quality lost when AVIF becomes a PDF?

A little, in principle. A PDF cannot hold AVIF data, so the picture is decoded and saved as a JPEG at quality 92. The pixel size is unchanged. File size usually grows, because AVIF compresses much better than JPEG.

Why is the PDF bigger than my AVIF file?

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats. The same picture as a JPEG inside a PDF will often be two to four times larger. That is a property of the formats, not something PlumPDF can avoid.

Can I convert multiple AVIF images into one PDF?

Yes. Add up to 50 files, keep "One PDF with all images" selected, and each image becomes one page in the order shown in the list. Choose "One PDF per image" if you want separate files, which you can download together as a zip.

What page size will my PDF have?

By default the page matches the image, so nothing is cropped or padded. If you pick A4 or US Letter, the image is centred and scaled down to fit, never enlarged past its natural size at 96 DPI. A4 and Letter also unlock orientation and margin options.

Is it safe to convert AVIF files to PDF online?

Yes, in the sense that matters here: PlumPDF never receives your files. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab discards everything. You can check this by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and converting anyway.
