How to sign a PDF without printing it
Open Sign PDF, add the document, draw or type your signature and drag it onto the signature line, then press Download signed PDF. This adds a visual signature, like signing a printout. It is not a certificate-based digital signature.
Open Sign PDFStep by step
- Open Sign PDF. Go to the Sign PDF page on PlumPDF. No account and nothing to install.
- Add the PDF. Drop the document you need to sign on the box. You sign one PDF at a time.
- Create your signature. Draw it with a finger, stylus or mouse, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload an image. It appears on the page you are viewing.
- Place it and download. Drag it onto the line and resize it with the corner handle. Add a date if you need one, then press Download signed PDF.
What kind of signature is this?
PlumPDF puts a picture of your signature on the page. The result is the same as signing a printed copy and scanning it, without the printer. This is a simple electronic signature. It does not prove who signed, and it does not show whether the file was changed afterwards, as a certificate-based digital signature does.
Whether a simple signature is accepted depends on who you are sending it to and where you are. For important contracts, check what the other side requires.
How do I get a clean result?
A few small habits make the signed page look right:
- Draw slowly on a phone or tablet, using a stylus if you have one.
- If you upload a photo of your signature, use dark ink on plain white paper. The white is made transparent, so only the ink shows.
- Choose black or blue ink to match how you would sign on paper.
- Zoom to check that the signature sits on the line and does not cover any text.
How do I sign several pages and add the date?
Move to another page with the arrows or the page strip and place the signature again. Each signature you create stays in the panel, so you can add it to as many pages as you need. The date stamp is filled in with today's date, and you can change the text before adding it.
What are the limits and privacy details?
The signature is drawn into the page, so a PDF reader cannot click and delete it. Your original file is not changed, so to start again, sign the original once more. If the PDF already has a digital signature, adding anything makes that signature report the file as changed.
Your signature is made and held in your browser tab only, and it is gone when you close the tab.
Questions
Can I sign a form that needs to be filled in first?
Fill it in first, then sign it. If you want the entries locked in before you send it, run the signed copy through Flatten PDF.
Can I sign with the keyboard?
Yes. Choose Type to create the signature, then tab to it and use the arrow keys to move it, plus and minus to resize it, and Delete to remove it.
Does the signed file keep its text?
Yes. Text stays selectable and pages you do not sign are untouched.
Is my signature saved for next time?
No. It is held only in memory while the page is open and is never uploaded or stored by PlumPDF.
