  2. Type the size

Type the size it must be under in MB, or tap 10, 16 or 25 MB. The page shows the picture size the video will have.

  3. Compress and download

Press Compress video. When it is done, download the smaller MP4 and send or upload it.

How a video gets under the size you choose

A video's size is its bitrate times its length, so the tool works backwards from your size: it keeps a little room for the file's own bookkeeping, gives the sound a share that keeps speech clear, and spends the rest on the picture.

If that leaves too little for the original picture size, it steps down, for example from 1080p to 720p, because a smaller clean picture looks better than a large blocky one. After making the video it checks the size, and if the encoder overshot it makes it once more with less data, so the file you download is always under your size.

The video is decoded and encoded by your own browser, using the phone's or computer's video hardware where it has it, so nothing is uploaded.

Questions about Compress Video

How do I make a video smaller for WhatsApp or email?

Choose the video, tap 16 MB for WhatsApp or 25 MB for most email, and press Compress video. The result is an MP4 under that size that plays on every phone and computer.

Will the video look worse?

It looks as good as the size allows. The tool spends the size you choose on picture and sound, and lowers the picture size when that keeps it cleaner than blocky. A short video at a generous size looks almost the same; a long one at a small size gets softer.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is read and made smaller on your own device, inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, so private and family videos stay private.

Why does it say the size is too small?

Every second of video needs some data. If the size is too small for the length, the picture would fall apart, so the tool tells you instead. Choose a larger size, or cut the video shorter first.

Which phones and browsers does it work in?

Recent Chrome, Edge and Samsung Internet on Android and computers, and Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It uses the video encoder built into the browser, so a newer phone is faster. If your browser cannot do it, the page says so.

Does the result keep the sound?

Yes. The sound is kept and made a little smaller too, more so when the size is tight. The result is an MP4 with H.264 video, the format every phone, computer and website accepts.
