M4A to MP3, for any player or upload
iPhone voice memos, many call and lecture recordings and some songs come as M4A, which older players, car stereos and some upload forms do not take. Choose the M4A, pick the quality and get an MP3 of the same sound. It runs in your browser, so your recording never leaves your device.

From M4A to MP3
An M4A file holds sound compressed as AAC in the same kind of container as an MP4 video. The tool reads it in pieces, decodes the sound and encodes it again as MP3 at the bitrate you choose, keeping its sample rate and channels where MP3 allows it.
MP3 is older than AAC and needs a slightly higher bitrate for the same sound, so pick 192 kbps for music if the M4A sounded good. Speech is clear at 128 kbps. Converting cannot add detail the original did not have.
The MP3 encoder comes with the page the first time you use it and then works offline. Everything happens on your device, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions about M4A to MP3
How do I convert M4A to MP3?
Choose the M4A file, pick the quality and press Convert to MP3. The whole recording is saved as an MP3.
Which quality should I pick for a voice recording?
128 kbps is clear for speech and keeps the file small. For music, 192 kbps sounds very good and 320 kbps is the best MP3 can do.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. The recording is converted on your own device, inside your browser tab, so private calls and memos stay private.
Can I keep only part of the recording?
Yes, with MP3 Cutter: type where the part starts and ends, and only that part is saved as an MP3.
Does it work for AAC and other sound files?
Yes. AAC, WAV, OGG and FLAC files and the sound of videos are converted the same way.
