WAV to MP3, about a tenth of the size
WAV recordings from recorders, studios and some phones are huge: about 10 MB a minute. Choose the WAV, pick the quality and get an MP3 of the same sound at roughly a tenth of the size, ready to email, share or upload. It runs in your browser, so your recording never leaves your device.

Why WAV files are so big, and MP3s are not
A WAV file stores every sample of the sound as it is: 44,100 samples a second for each of two channels, about 10 MB for each minute. An MP3 keeps what the ear can hear and leaves out what it cannot, which brings the same minute down to 1 to 2.5 MB depending on the bitrate you choose.
The tool reads the WAV in pieces, so a long recording does not have to fit in memory, and encodes it as MP3 at your chosen bitrate with the same channels.
The MP3 encoder comes with the page the first time and then works offline. Everything happens on your device, so the recording is never uploaded.
Questions about WAV to MP3
How much smaller will the MP3 be?
CD-quality WAV is about 10 MB a minute. At 192 kbps an MP3 is about 1.4 MB a minute, and at 128 kbps about 1 MB, so roughly a tenth of the size or less.
Will I hear a difference?
At 192 or 320 kbps most people cannot tell an MP3 from the WAV on phones, earphones or laptop speakers. Keep the WAV if you still need to edit or master the recording.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. The recording is converted on your own device, inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I cut the recording too?
Yes, with MP3 Cutter: choose the WAV, type where the part starts and ends, and only that part becomes an MP3.
Does it convert FLAC as well?
Yes. FLAC, OGG, M4A and AAC files are converted to MP3 the same way.
