WEBM to MP4, a video that plays everywhere

Screen recorders, browsers and some apps save videos as WEBM, which iPhones, PowerPoint and many websites do not play. Choose the WEBM and get the same video as an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, at the same picture size. It runs in your browser, so your recording never leaves your device.

How to use WEBM to MP4

  1. Choose your WEBM

Press Select a video and pick the WEBM file, for example a screen recording or a meeting recording.

  2. Convert to MP4

Press Convert to MP4. The video is made into H.264 at high quality; a long recording takes a little while.

  3. Download the MP4

Download the MP4 and share it, add it to slides, or upload it where the WEBM was refused.

What changes when a WEBM becomes an MP4

A WEBM file holds video in VP8, VP9 or AV1 and sound in Opus or Vorbis, formats made for the web but not supported by iPhones, PowerPoint or many editing apps. The tool decodes each frame and makes it again as H.264, and the sound as AAC, the pair that an MP4 is expected to hold.

It keeps the picture size and frame rate of the recording and uses a high quality setting, so text in a screen recording stays sharp. Your browser does the work with your device's video hardware where it has it.

Nothing is uploaded at any point, so meeting and screen recordings stay on your device.

Questions about WEBM to MP4

How do I convert WEBM to MP4?

Choose the WEBM file and press Convert to MP4, then download the MP4. The picture size and sound stay the same.

Why will my WEBM not play on an iPhone or in PowerPoint?

WEBM usually holds VP8 or VP9 video, which iPhones, PowerPoint and many players do not support well. An MP4 with H.264 video plays almost everywhere.

How long does it take?

WEBM video has to be made again as H.264, so it takes roughly as long as the video plays, faster on a newer phone or computer. The page shows the progress and you can cancel at any time.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The recording is converted on your own device, inside your browser tab, which matters for screen recordings with private information on screen.

Does it work for MKV too?

Yes, MKV files that your browser can read are converted the same way.
