How to use Video to GIF

  1. Choose your video

Press Select a video and pick an MP4, MOV or WEBM file. The first five seconds are chosen for you.

  2. Choose the part and size

Type the second it starts and ends, pick the width, and pick Normal or Smooth. The page shows how many frames the GIF will have.

  3. Make and download

Press Make GIF. Watch it play, then download it, or change the part and make it again.

How a video becomes a GIF

The tool takes a picture from the video every tenth or fifteenth of a second between the start and end you choose, at the width you pick. Only those moments are decoded, so even a long video gives a GIF quickly.

Each frame gets its own palette of the 256 colours that suit it best, which keeps skin, sky and screens looking natural despite the GIF limit. The frames are then written into one GIF that loops forever and plays at the speed of the original video.

Everything happens on your device. The GIF plays on every phone, computer, chat app and website, and your video is never uploaded.

Questions about Video to GIF

How do I make a GIF from a video?

Choose the video, type the second the GIF should start and end, and press Make GIF. The GIF plays in a loop on the page, ready to download and share.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 20 seconds at Smooth, and up to 30 at Normal. A GIF stores every frame as a full picture, so longer ones get very large and many apps refuse them. A few seconds is what works best.

Why is my GIF bigger than the video?

Videos store only what changes between frames; a GIF stores every frame whole, with at most 256 colours each. To make it smaller, choose a shorter part, a smaller width or Normal smoothness.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The frames are taken from the video and made into a GIF on your own device, inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. The GIF format has no sound. To keep the sound, compress the video instead with Compress Video, or save the sound with Video to MP3.
